Instrumentation: Flute sextet (piccolo, 3 flutes, 2 alto flutes) Duration: 8' Program Notes: Hide and Seek (2020) is a piece that explores the feeling of transitioning back and forth from environments in which you feel like you cannot be yourself, to being in a space where you are comfortable, free and welcomed. For people from marginalized populations, this going back and forth is a daily practice. From navigating in the professional world, to engaging in normal everyday activities, sudden feelings of anxiety, fear and being judged can arise if you are not considered “the norm.” There is great relief and peace that comes from being in a safe place where you can be yourself. These spaces are precious and sacred, but they are also bittersweet, as one cannot stay in them forever. Commissioned by the Oklahoma Flute Society.
