Maxime must now win on Thursday to take their match to tiebreaks. Giri-Andreikin ended in a draw, but only after a thrilling game where Anish Giri missed a huge chance to beat Dmitry Andreikin. A draw was agreed in a position where it still wasn’t clear if Giri’s bishop pair would be sufficient to counter Andreikin’s two rooks.
